The 16th annual VCSU Scholarship Auction, scheduled for Friday, April 23 at the Valley City Eagles Club, is taking on a Hawaiian theme this year: "Surf on over to the VCS-Uau."
Kim Hesch, assistant director of Advancement at VCSU, said, "The scholarship auction is the single biggest event in terms of generating scholarship dollars, and it seems to get bigger and better every year."
The theme this year is "Surf on over to the VCS-Uau." The Eagles will be decked with Hawaiian & Tropical decor, and attendees are encouraged to come dressed in keeping with the theme.
The social hour and the silent auction begin at 5:00 pm. Each attendee will receive $10 of "Viking Money" they can use to play a variety of games (such as blackjack, limbo, etc.) and can register for a variety of door prizes with their winnings. A buffet dinner will be served from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
The live auction will kick off at 7:00 pm. This is your chance to bid on some great deals while contributing to a great cause. All proceeds from the auction go directly to scholarships. Some of the items up for bid are:
After April 15, a list of auction items will be available at alumni.vcsu.edu (click on the "Auction" button).
In recent years, the Scholarship Auction has featured a "horse race" event that has become a new favorite. The race will be back this year, but will take the form of a surfing race to be consistent with the Hawaiian theme. According to Hesch, "Individuals and groups can participate by bidding on surf boards, and the winning bids will be entered into a race in which a roll of the dice lets each participant 'catch a wave.' The first team to reach the beach wins 50% of the combined winning bids - the remaining 50% goes to VCSU scholarships."
Hesch said that scholarships are vital to VCSU's success and all proceeds from the auction go directly to V500 and Century Club scholarships. "Our goal is $45,000 this year, and we would like to sell 400 tickets to the event."
Everyone who buys a ticket will be entered into drawings for valuable prizes including an Arctic Cat 50 cc Scooter (sponsored by Dacotah Bank, a $1,200 value), a $500 gift certificate to Leever's SuperValu (sponsored by Leever's), and a Briggs & Stratton Pressure Washer (sponsored by NAPA, a $399 value). Ticket holders need not be present to win.
Tickets to the auction are $35 each or 2 for $60 and includes admission, two beverage tickets, a full buffet dinner, and participation in 3 drawings held throughout the night. Tickets can be purchased from the VCSU Foundation office by calling 845-7203 or from an auction committee member. The auction is a collaborative effort of the V-500 and Century Club boards.
